Dreaming of a beach holiday in Australia? Or an exotic trip to the Seychelles? Ladies and gents, put your credit card away and book a trip to Rhossili Bay instead.
Why? Well, Rhossili Bay is home to Rhossili beach, and in a survey undertaken by Trip Advisor this stunning spot has just been voted the ninth best beach in the world. It’s also received the grand accolade of being the best beach in the UK too and the third best beach in Europe. Big congratulations to Rhossili! It’s fantastic news.
The beaches’ stunning three-mile stretch of sand has managed to beat many other glamorous destinations, including beaches in the Seychelles, Australia, South Africa, Italy, Spain and Mexico.
James Kay, the spokesman for Trip Advisor, summed it up when he said: “These awards recognise the best beaches in the UK and worldwide, according to the travellers that have visited and given them the highest levels of praise.
To have a Welsh beach named among not only the best in Europe, but the best in the world, just goes to show how lucky we are in the UK to have such stunning scenery right on our doorstep.
We have to say, we fully agree with James. We are extremely lucky to have such stunning scenery so close by.
If you’ve never been, Rhossili beach is clearly well-worth a visit. There are huge expanses of soft white sands to kick back on. The sea is beautifully clean so it is perfect for swimmers. It is also a popular destination for surfers – even if you’re not quite ready to jump on a board and join in, watching the surfers is a great way to spend an afternoon. You can also go fishing, rockclimbing and parasailing.
The beach also boasts rugged cliffs and scenic coastal walks. It is home to a whole range of interesting birdlife and there are incredible views of Worms head to enjoy. Stick around for long enough and you’ll also witness one of Rhossili beaches spectacular sunsets too. And trust us when we say it is well-worth staying late to watch.
So, as you can see there’s a lot going for Rhossili beach and although we’re over the moon that it has received the award, we have to say we’re not surprised. It’s 100 per cent deserved.
Especially because, although the beach has bags of character and charm, it’s also extremely practical. Although there is a steep walk down to the beach, there is a large carpark, a pub that serves food and a shop. As you know, some beach trips can be a nightmare, especially if you’re travelling with young children. Yet this spot has all of the amenities and necessary facilities to make a visit to this site of natural beauty an incredibly enjoyable, stress-free day out.
If you fancy taking a trip to visit Rhossili beach, there are lots of holiday accommodation options available for you in the Swansea and Gower area.
You could stay in Forge Cottage (Llanmadoc, Gower, Swansea, South Wales, UK SA3 1DB), a cosy Bed and Breakfast just 10 miles from Rhossili. This Bed and Breakfast is over 250 years old, but has recently been refurbished by the hugely welcoming owners, Mike and Pearl. Although it is a 4 star B&B it is just £30 – £40 per night, per person to stay.

Or, how about Parc-le-Breos Guest House (arkmill, Gower, Swansea, South Wales, United Kingdom SA3 2HA), a nineteenth century hunting lodge? Again, this holiday home is under 10 miles from Rhossili, so it’s perfect if you want to explore the beach and the surrounding coastal paths. The guest house has also been awarded 4 stars and is £37.00 per night.

For an extra special trip we highly recommend Craig y Nos Castle (Brecon Road, Penycae, Swansea Valley, Powys, SA9 1GL). Although a little further out from Rhossili than Forge Cottage of Parc-le-Breos Guest House, the beach is just over an hour away. This mock gothic Victorian Castle offers luxurious rooms, a hot tub and ghost walks. Prices vary. It is £143 bed and breakfast per night per room during the weekend, but £123 on weekdays. For two night bed and breakfast breaks there is a reduced rate of £150 (£75 per room per night) and three night bed and breakfast breaks for £200 per room. There are also discounts for groups above ten, and also for families in family rooms.
