We are suckers for pretty, and we also love hassle-free, so we loved getting the chance to test out an adorable vintage flower design popup tent, from The Bedding Company. We usually camp in tents that are significantly bigger, so to get a fair opinion, we got team member Shammie (student and festival lover) to take it away for a weekend break in the Lakes. Read on to find out more!
Of course we loved the design, but looks aren’t everything, so no matter how pretty, we want to know that a product can stand up to real life use. For our field test we used the tent twice. The first time, team member Shammie took the tent away on a weekend trip to the Lakes. Used to sleeping in popup tents, she reported back that it was quick and easy to put up and had enough space for her and her boyfriend. However, she did say that they had to keep their rucksacks in the car as there is no porch area and not enough room in the tent for the two of them plus their gear.
We then put it up again in the garden for our shoot, and were impressed by the ease and speed of pitching the tent. It literally took us 2 minutes, and that included pegging it down and pegging the guy ropes too! Once inside, it took a little bit of getting used to. Our tents tend to be big, really big, and it’s been a long time since either of us had used a 2 man tent.
I set up my bed, took my rucksack, book and lantern inside and snuggled into my SLPY bag. The tent is quite low, so I was unable to sit up fully (I am 5.7″), but there was ample room for me with plenty of space left for my various bits and bobs including my large rucksack. I would recommend the tent for use by just one adult, unless you are looking for something easily portable and you don’t intend to do anything, but literally sleep in the tent, as with two of us inside, it was rather snug.
Popup tents are ideal for short camping trips and are best used in the summer time. This tent is waterproofed, but even so, popup tents are typically are not able to stand up well to prolonged bad weather, so for summer music festivals, sleep overs, for older kids who want a little bit of independence on a family camping trip or for those who need something light and highly portable, then this is a super little tent. The tent also comes in other patterns and there are matching sleeping bags and camp chairs available too.
Lovely attention to detail
Clear and simple instructions, though if you aren’t familiar with how to fold away a popup tent, we recommend viewing a YouTube ‘how to’ video before your camping trip
Sturdy sewn in external peg loops
The gorgeous exterior of the tent (more tent designs are available here)
Ventilation window
Mrs Betty Owl inside the tent to show scale
Tent set up with a single self inflating air mat and over sized single SLPY sleeping bag
We’d recommend this tent to anyone on a budget, who doesn’t want to compromise on looks – at just £30 (best price from The Bedding Company), it’s great value for money. The tent feels very well made, with lovely little styling features that set it aside from similarly priced competitor tents. It’s lightweight, super easy to pitch (it took us 2 minutes to pitch it, including pegging it down). Brilliant value for something that looks so distinctive and we love that you can get a matching sleeping bag and camp chair!
A big thank you to The Bedding Company who supplied the Highplains Vintage Floral Popup Tent for us to field test.
We were absolutely delighted to get our hands on a FieldCandy tent for our most recent camping trip. Hardcore campers tend to be a little suspicious of camping gear that looks a bit different, and lets be honest, camping isn’t an area renowned for having high design values – practical and functional is where it’s at. Anything that looks like it is design driven is regarded as being potentially a victim of style of substance, so we were keen to see how a tent from FieldCandy would get on in real life.
The packaging is just beautiful, the tent comes in a shiny branded box and even the bag that the tent comes in has the same pattern as the fly sheet. The whole thing is small and light, making it perfect for those who don’t have much storage space or for anyone needing to carry their tent with them.
Putting the tent up was a doddle and it felt well made, sturdy and capable
Detailed instructions are provided, but we only needed a quick glance at the pictures. Putting the frame up was an absolute doddle. With just 3 poles to fit together with sturdy plastic connectors, the frame was up in less than a minute. The inner tent clipped easily and securely to the frame, taking seconds for 2 of us to attach. The beautifully patterned fly sheet followed and took just a couple of minutes to fit over the frame and peg down.
The tent took no more than 5 minutes to put up in total, making it the quickest tent i’ve ever put up (apart from popup tenets of course). There are no guy ropes which helps make it so quick to put up, and means it can fit into small spaces, making it ideal for festivals where space is at a premium. Despite the lack of guy ropes, being on a very exposed, windy coastal campsite, posed no problem at all. The tent felt sturdy and capable from the outset.
The spacious front porch area makes a big difference to the inside space, and gives you somewhere handy to stow things like shoes and bags. We think that it’s the perfect festival tent, and it is ideal for short camping trips, or for people who do not have their own transport and so need a tent that can be easily carried. Social Butterfly is pricey compared to similar sized tents, but you are paying for quality, attention to detail and beautiful design and styling. You won’t be disappointed with this tent and the second it’s up, you’ll feel like a little kid again, excited to dive straight inside it!
Yes, absolutely!

If you are heading off to a festival this summer, you’ll need a tent. No matter what your budget or your size and style requirements, we’ve brought you a shortlist of the best festival camping tents for summer 2015.
Before you choose a festival tent, you should ask yourself the following questions.

Ridge tent design, which is compact and easy to carry and put up. With similar looks to the FieldCandy tent featured further on in this article, the main difference is the quality and the lower price point. A great, funky design, though we’d recommend it only for single occupancy use.
EASY CAMP People Image 2 Man Tent £60.00
Cheap and cheerful and a good alternative to the usual entry level popup festival tent. This will be a bit sturdier and that little bit more spacious. A great budget option if you are sharing a tent, and lovely and spacious if you’re having it all to yourself.
Festival Fun 4 Man Dome Tent £29.99
FieldCandy tents are quirky and design driven, making them ideal for anyone who wants to stand out and express their personality – the most important benefit though is their quality, which is superb. Compact packaging is easy for one person to carry. Read our FieldCandy tent review.
A great value tent, that is ideal for those who want a bit of extra space and don’t fancy spending the weekend packed into a tiny tent that you can’t even sit up in. It’s still a pretty basic tent, but it’s great value and perfect for 2 to share.
Hi Gear Venture 3 DLX Tent £59.99
This little tent is cheap and cheerful and super fast to put up. Don’t even think of sleeping more than 1 adult in it though, and don’t expect it to stand up to torrential rain. No single skin popup tent can do that, but for a short summer music festival, this does the job.
A tent you can stand up in is a no-brainer and at this price, from a brand like Outwell, we think the Dusk 5 is a brilliant buy. Quality construction means you’ll get bags of use out of it, and you’ll be thankful for the extra space too.
This is a great quality double skin tent that will withstand rain and see you through future camping trips too. It is a popup construction so will take a couple of minutes to pitch and peg down so you can get on with having fun.

We are big fans of canvas bell tents and they are ideal for alternative festivals and for family festivals too. They are big and heavy, making them useless unless you have your own transport, but they are spacious, airy and an utter delight to use. Roomy enough for the whole family or a big group of friends.
4m Cookies and Cream Tent With Zipped in Ground Sheet £459 Boutique Camping
A bit more space makes this ideal for 2 to sleep in without being squished up, leaving room for bags and festival essentials like fancy dress outfits and crates of beer. Decent enough quality for you to use again once the festival is over.

We think this makes an ideal group or family festival camping tent. Robens make extremely high quality tents that are weatherproof and durable. This will stand out too, making it easy to spot amongst a sea of tents.
Robens Kiowa Tipi Tent £699.99
Great head space for a more spacious feel, without being too big. The tent goes up almost instantly thanks to it’s clever design, so you’ll be pitched and off having fun in no time at all. Coleman tents are usually good quality, so you’ll get plenty of use out of this after the festival is over too. If you like the look of this, check out the Coleman Instant Dome tent.
Coleman Instant Tent™ Tourer 4 £139.99
if you are traveling to a festival by foot, you want a tent that is compact and light. This fits the bill at a decent price. Sturdier than a basic popup tent, this little tent does the job.

Our roundup of the very best tents for family and weekend camping this summer. We’ve been camping for over 30 years, and have owned many different styles of tent, from a variety of brands. Whilst a Lichfield dome tent was all I needed as a student, i’ve since owned Vango, Gelert and Coleman tents as well as last seasons purchase of bell tent, and having camped in all sorts of conditions that would put any tent to the test, we’ve learned how to spot a great tent when we see it.
Whilst we’ve not personally tested the following roundup of tents, looking at their features, heritage of the brand, general usability and cost, we’ve scoured the UKs outdoor shops and brought a selection of our favourite tents available this year, with many models featured being brand new for 2015.

The Cebe Origins Ski Goggles look amazing and despite feeling very big on my face, they fitted well and eliminated the usual small gap I get between my helmet and the top of my goggles. The visibility provided by the goggles is completely unrestricted and provided me with a wider than usual field of vision, so I could see more of the slope.
During our recent trip to Morzine in the French Alps, the conditions were hugely variable. With heavy snow and flat light in the morning followed by clear blue skies and blazing sunshine in the afternoon. Such variable conditions are a real test and make a good all-round lens a must. My Oakley Stockholm goggles have interchangeable lens’ in response to the problem of variable light conditions, but no one takes spare lens up a mountain, so you still end up stuck with one lens depending on what you choose before heading out.
Sticking to a lens that performs well in all lights makes a lot of sense, and at a price of £54.95, the Cebe Origins Ski Goggles did a great job, and were perhaps a little better in bright light than they were in very low, flat light; however visibility on the day I tested them, was low in general due to heavy snowfall, so I think it’s fair to say they are a good all rounder.
The Goggles are big. Out of a group of 11 people, with 8 of us wearing goggles, they were definitely the biggest. This extra size however provided a great field of vision and meant it was possible to wear prescription glasses under them too.
The Cebe Origin goggles look great and are good for their price (£54.95 from Trekwear); the performance of the lens makes them decent all-rounders. They are ideal for those with a larger frame, or who need to wear glasses whilst on the slopes.
Thank you to Trekwear who supplied the Cebe goggles for us to field test.
